FOR most it was back from the sun-soaked beaches of far-away climes and on to the hallowed turf of Muntz Hall to kick-start the pre-season friendlies and lose a few of those extra pounds gained from over-indulging in foreign beers and fast-food gorges. So, suitably tanned, the Prem Champions took to the field to face Northampton side Real Datarider. Neither side knew much about the other so, as expected the first half hour was spent sussing eachother out. The visitors were quick on the break which gave the Zante returnee’s at the back a wake up call. But they remained resolute and looked to the five in the middle of the park to ease the pressure and create something at the other end. They didn’t disappoint and it was Jamie Daly who, on the half hour, put in a pin-point cross from the left that picked out Stuey Hall who had the easiest of headers to open the scoring. Five minutes later a superb through ball by Ross Kendall was met by Robbie Ager who drilled the ball low to the keepers left and in the back of the net for the second. The Rhinos had now got the bit between their teeth and on 37 minutes Phil Green made it three with a neat individual effort. With half-time looming large, some excellent build-up play ended with a cross into the box which Paul O’Brien got on the end of and dispatched the ball into the back of the net with superb precision. Actually he mis-kicked it
and it bobbled underneath the advancing keeper. Still, they all count and Church Hill went in at half time four goals to the good. The second half saw Church Hill switch from the first half 3-5-2 to their more orthodox 4-3-3, while the visitors also tinkered with their line-up and it was they who struck first ten minutes into the re-start when Ricky Smith capitalised on a defensive mix up to reduce the deficit. But Church still looked comfortable and pushed forward at every opportunity and with 68 minutes on the clock Brendan Hicks made space for himself and neatly slid the ball past the Datarider keeper to take the score to 5-1. Three minutes later and “The Don” struck again with a near-identical strike taking his tally to two and extended Church’s lead to 6-1. Just a two minute gap this time for the next goal. Again some excellent build-up play led to another pin-point cross by Ross Kendall, this time picking out Phil Green on the back post who made no mistake with the header. 7-1. But, with ten minutes remaining, Ricky Smith made the most of another defensive mix-up and bagged his and Real Datarider’s second. 7-2. However, it was going to be no miracle ending for the visitors as on 88 minutes a tidy move from Brendan Hicks to Stuey Hall to Phil Green and back to Stuey Hall resulted in the ball being blasted into the back of the net for Stuey’s brace and a final scoreline of 8-2.
