I thought we showed great determination and grit. We played some good football at times especially in the first half but with the pitch being so dry and hard we struggled with our style of play a little bit. The first half we had most of the possession and were comfortable with anything Aston Fields threw at us.
I thought there were some good performances from most of the players but I also thought there was room for improvement from others. This is not to put a downer on the overall performance; I just believe there is always room for improvement.
It was good to see Alex back and with a few games under his belt as well as some consistency in turning up I think we will be strong for the games that are left in the season. There are some big games ahead of us and if we do want to win the league plus any cups then we don’t have any room left for any slip up’s. We need to win them all! Every player needs to commit themselves from now on in and needs to have the will to win.
There were some bad politics voiced about the club before this week’s game which does not help the players and the club get into the right frame of mind before a game or help the club achieve success and which also, I believe, was not necessary. Especially when I thought we are all men and not children anymore. I hear and believe that this has now been sorted out; however I believe individuals should think before they comment. The players did not seem to let it affect their performance so I think the book is closed on that now and hopefully will remain so.
Back to the game, the second half was totally different to that of the first. We had to defend and defend for long periods. With only a one goal lead and the potential possibility of extra time and penalties, every player had to dig in deep and stick together which they did. It was one of the most resolute performances I have been involved with since I started playing for CHFC. Not all of us were fully match fit and we also had players missing for one reason or another, but we held firm and stuck to our guns. I was very happy that we never got flustered or got on each others back about mistakes or lack of discipline. Hopefully we can continue to bring this to our games in future.
I must say that I was also pleased that the likes of Wrighty and Rooster who didn’t get any playing time during this game but did not act in a way that would cause upset amongst the team. I understand, I have been there myself, how frustrating it is not to play. I am sure they will fight for their places and when they get their chance it will be up to them to cement that in. I just hope that they remain patient because there is no ‘I’ in team which we all know, so throughout the season we will all play our parts.
Overall I think as a neutral it must have been an interesting game to watch. Literally a game of two half’s with a cameo performance from Pablo who had he of scored that unbelievable swerving 40 yard strike, would not have let us forget it in a hurry.
As I have said many times before in these comments, ‘I look forward to our next game.
