CHURCH HILL 3 - 3 SOUTH REDDITCH
November 8, 2009
Church returned to Muntz Hall after last week’s free week to play one of only two teams to have defeated them this season - South Redditch. Several players were absent from this week’s fixtures with Beauch, Ager, Fabe and Ross all away on holidays and Joe Troth on a stag do and Hilly still injured. In came new signing Kevin Jones and re-recruited were Krys Stanton and Jamie Daly. The pitch looked immaculate despite the recent downpours and with heavy rain coming down during the warm up the hard work done by the Sav boys was beginning to reap its reward.
With so many players out the Church started slowly and it was little surprise when Carl Surman opened the scoring after turning inside the returning Jordan Jones and slotting the ball wide and past Mike Hewitt. Church responded admirably though and excellent approach work saw Marc Grogan score the equalising goal. As the rain came down and Gringo got soaked running the line, Church began to take a stranglehold of the game and the returning Alex Torth, alongside the emerging Danny Byford and the experience of Jamie Daly, were controlling the game in the middle of the park. Another clinical move was again expertly finished by the impressive Grogan which saw Church enter the half time break 2 goals to 1 in the lead.
The second half was clearly going to be about whether or not Church could protect but also build
upon their lead and the early signs were very positive. Despite the supposed lack of threat from the opposition you always felt that with their pace and enthusiasm throughout the side would result in one or two chances coming their way. With the introduction of Wrighty from the bench for debutant Jones, Church were still unable to increase their lead and it was no surprise that with no more than five minutes to go South Redditch took their chance when it was presented to them and levelled the scores at 2-2.
Church could have easily dropped their heads but they showed great character and resolve to then go back up the other end of the pitch and regain lead with a superb cross-come shot from Marc Grogan and in the process the hat-trick ball. Now you would think having regained the lead so late Church would use their nous to keep the ball and give the opposition no chances whatsoever to create a chance for South Redditch. However, clearly not learning from previous experiences, South Redditch went up the other end of the pitch and duly went and equalised again for the second time. A very disappointing result and with Westbury coming next week Church need to buck up their ideas.
