SOUTH REDDITCH 1 - 0 CHURCH HILL
October 18, 2009
Church travelled to Feckenham hoping that if other results went their way they could go top of the league. Despite all three Troth's missing in action Church went into the game with a strong starting eleven with Beauch, Wrighty and Pabs on the bench. Also missing from last week were Adam Hill (not Matthew) and a holidaying Marc Grogan. In came Chip Frampton along with the returning Russ Ager. The game got under way and it was clear to see Church were up against a young and energetic South Redditch side capable of big performances with a recent thrashing of Black Horse under their belt.
As mentioned in last week’s report watching Church is very much becoming like watching Barcelona. Lots of possession, 70 percent territory and up against a defence minded ten-men behind the ball opposition. With this type of scenario ahead of you an early goal is always very helpful and the perfect opportunity presented itself when Brendan used his pace to create a 1v1 situation only to open himself and pass the ball left-footed wide of the post. As the first half wore on, a same pattern of play continued to evolve and more entertainment could be seen down the road as the local parking inspector ticketed multiple vehicles parked on the dodgiest yellow lines you could wish to see. Half time came and went with no goals with a 0-0 stalemate looking very much on the cards. One piece worth noting down though was a lovely moment of skill from Ross Kendall, flipping the ball over the opposing defender’s foot before firing his volley just over the bar.
The second half began with the same pattern of play, Church with most of the ball and on top but unable to create many clear cut chances against a hard- working and fairly disciplined opposition. Neat approach play from Byford, Frampton and Adams was clear for all to see but clear-cut chances less so.
As the game wore on the double substitution of O’Brien and Wright for Hicks and Frampton saw an increase in tempo from the Church side and Ross's dancing feet saw the creation of another wonderful opportunity but again the same result as previously with Brendan's chance, a missed shot wide of the post.
Then came the most controversial moment of the match. With Church pushing forward and Sav now up front, South broke away and after a scramble in the box the ball ran loose to Ross Kendall to clear and the South forward falling in the box looking as though he had been taken out by the Church keeper. A clear penalty some may say though others on the touchline thought it a coming together the ref gave the penalty and looked set to caution Michael. Amazingly, out came the RED CARD, and all of a sudden Church were facing up to a penalty, the loss of a man and captain Sav out of defence and into goal. The penalty was successfully converted and Church's recent unbeaten run looked incredibly vulnerable. A great headed opportunity late on for Ross was all Church could muster and their first away defeat of the season was assigned to the record books. MoM is difficult as offensively nobody from Church stood out. Consistent performances from Danny Byford, Sav and Skinner are worth noting but again if there is a better player in the league in his position then I haven’t seen him play yet, Matty Harris, faultless once again and even in a one-sided match his performances still stand head and shoulders above many.
