ASTON FIELDS ATHLETICO 1 - 5 CHURCH HILL
October 11, 2009
After last week’s competitive local derby Church returned to action with a bread and butter league fixture against recent bogey side Aston Fields Athletico. A comprehensive 4-1 victory earlier on in the season had banished any worries of being unable to beat the side from Bromsgrove and Church entered the game full of confidence and self belief. A new pitch and surroundings many would of thought may have unsettled and worried such a young side but a decent playing surface coupled with enough room to pass the ball about very much played into Church’s passing hands.
The game got underway in poor conditions with Athletico showing their intentions immediately with 10 men behind the ball. With Beauch absent Pabs became number one for the day and had to make changes from last week. A hungover Al Troth was replaced by new signing Matt Hill and a returning Grogan came in for the recently impressive Skinner who reverted to his right back position from the Headless Cross game.
Despite plenty of disgruntled arguing from the opposition Church opened the scoring early with a well executed finish from Ross Kendall. Danny Byford particularly impressive in the middle of the park was dictating play with excellent movement and passing. Supported by Joe Adams and impressive debutant Matt Hill the Church side resembled a Barcelona side trying to breakdown a stubborn but rather negative mid-table Spanish side such as Recreativo or Almeria. The first half came to an end with Church on top but still only one goal ahead. A special mention for Matty Harris who at the back made several excellent interceptions using his athleticism and brilliant ability to read a situation.
The second half was again much of the same, in tricky conditions referee Harris had his hands full but did the best he could to make the right decision at
the right time. A second goal was on the cards and a loose ball in the box was superbly finished by the cultured right foot of Joe Adams to double Church's lead. You would have thought watching from the touchline the game was finished and Church were now comfortably ahead but the award of a penalty to Athletico brought them back into the game and a clinical finish past Mike Hewitt in goal reduced the arrears to a single goal.
The introduction at this point of Mark Wright changed the game again back in Church's favour. It would be fair to say Mark would be the first to admit he needs to work on his fitness, however, his eye for a goal is there for all to see and he took the one real chance he had after coming on by swivelling on the edge of the box to slot the ball away and increase Church’s lead back to two. Further goals in the dying minutes for Roscco and The Don meant that church finished comfortable winners by a scoreline of 5 goals to 1. As secretary and match reporter I echo the sentiments of Pabs with his glowing endorsement of recent Joe Troth performances, his link up play in particular is consistently first class.
MOM this week goes to the increasingly impressive Danny Byford who looked like he might struggle to get in during the early parts of the season but now has cemented his place in the side and looks one of the best central midfielders not just in the division but in the whole of the West Midlands. A significant assessment I know but nevertheless fully deserved! Church move onto three consecutive league games over the next four weeks after this week’s game against South Redditch. If four wins can be achieved then Church will be in a very strong position regarding their league campaign! With the busy Xmas period looming large!!!!!!!!
