In a very highly anticipated match the second round of the Terry Cup between Church Hill Athletic and Church Hill FC got underway at Washford. There had been much confusion over the venue for the game, with St Augustines, Greenlands and Washford all muted as potential venues but at the last minute Washford was confirmed as the venue. The game itself was fast and furious early on with Athletic bright and busy in the middle of the park competing against a much changed line-up from last week. Jordan Jones, Joe Troth, Alex Troth and Brett Skinner all coming in for the injured and cup tied quartet of Chip, The Don, Grogan and Beauch.
With Woody up front Athletic were a consistent threat throughout the early parts of the game, and it took a piece of magic from Brett Skinner to superbly set up the opening goal, cleverly back healing the ball into the path of the Danny Byford who side-footed the ball into the far bottom corner. The game continued at a frenetic pace and the gulf in class and divisions was hard to see as an Athletic side, themselves with plenty of quality, stretched and tested a Church Hill side. Again, some excellent football from Alex Troth, Joe Adams and Brett Skinner created what looked a simple tap in for Ross Kendall at the far post, but with the ball bouncing high in the air Rossco's quality made what was actually quite a difficult chance look very easy. Back came Athletic, several chances were created most notably a 1 v 1 for Woody whose shot was saved brilliantly by Mike Hewitt in goal.
Athletic’s hard work and effort was eventually rewarded when the hard-working Leon Kandicore slotted home just before halftime to put Athletic back in the game.
The second half saw Church Hill FC come back into
the game and excellent football in the middle of the park, especially from the talented due of Al troth and Joe Adams , saw Church begin to get a stranglehold on the game. Athletic had changed their line-up, most notably the all-action Brenton coming into the middle of the park for the talented Woody and in the process reducing the space for Church Hill FC players despite the best effort of Al and Joe.
As the second half wore on Church Hill FC started to get a stranglehold on the game and chances started to appear. A rather quiet Jo Troth missed a 1 v 1 but redeemed himself moments  later with a simple header at the back post to extend the lead to 3-1. The moment of the match followed shortly after, superb work from Al Troth, beating three or four players with exceptional close control before slotting the ball in the far corner to increase the lead to 4-1. A scrambled goal at the other end made the score 4-2 and several substitutions later saw the game finally finish 4-2 to Church Hill FC.
A special mention for Les Jeavons, who, despite one or two omissions, refereed the game superbly and will now retire with many hundreds of games under his belt and the respect and admiration of many footballers from the Redditch area also.
MOM: Very tough this week. Al Troth impressive on his return, Brett Skinner a constant threat and Matty Harris his usually reliable and high quality self. But, overall, moving into defence in the process Sav was again his brilliant self. Sav has blossomed into both a brilliant captain but also a consistent and highly effective performer. It is also worth mentioning the tireless work he and his team do up at the ground to prepare, maintain and look after both the playing surface, surrounding area and changing rooms.
