In the first round of the Keith Turner Cup Church were drawn to play Headless Cross in a mouth- watering tie. The returning, Chip, Alex and Brett swelled the numbers available to Beauch and Pabs and is now a clear indication of the squad strength they now have at their disposal. Headless Cross, on the other hand, had notable absentees including Matthew Hill and James Hayden. The game got underway on what can only be described as a poor pitch not really conducive to free-flowing football. Early exchanges were pretty even but it would be fair to say that Church were the more positive and threatening of the two teams. An early chance for Church saw Brendan rush through one v one only to have his worthwhile effort saved by the keeper. As the game progressed Headless Cross continued to work hard all over the park and in the process made life difficult for a Church side not really flowing in anyway shape or form. The first half drew to a close with no goals scored and Church scratching their heads as to why last weeks 5-0 had been followed up with a 0-0 half time score.
The second half began with much the same pattern of play, Brett Skinner, an early first half replacement for the injured Chip, was making progress down the right hand side and in the process occupying one of the Headless Cross’s main threats. With 20 minutes or so to go, Pabs, with assistance from an unnamed source, made the bold decision to replace Marc Grogan with Joe Troth and in the process sacrifice some pace up front for more of a central target. It paid dividends almost immediately with a superb 1-2
between Ross and Joe resulting in a good chance just being missed. As extra time loomed a scrabble in the box resulted in a loose ball running to Brendan and the first goal of the game.
Amazing, despite hardly threatening, Headless Cross went straight up the other end and hit a post. Normal service was resumed very quickly and further goals from Skinner, Sav and a second for The Don, saw the game finish with a slightly if not realistic score line of Headless Cross 0 Church Hill 4. Church are really flying at the moment but we all know momentum can be stopped in a heartbeat and if they wish to win something this season then Church must continue to keep their foot on the gas and stay positive regardless of the scoreline during any game. Next week is a huge fixture against local rivals Church Hill Athletic and the returning Tom Troth and Russ Ager will further increase the options available to the management team.
