5 STAR CHURCH DESTROY CHAMPIONS!
Not many expected the return meeting between Church and Black Horse to be so quickly fixtured but the wait was short-lived as Church had a speedy opportunity to exact revenge for the heartbreak of the home defeat in the second game of the season. Noticeable absentees included Jordan Jones (away with the county), and the trio of Alex Troth, Chip Frampton and Russ Ager (all suspended). The line-up for Church took the shape of a 4-3-3 formation with Tom Troth coming in to play out of position at right back and Brendan Hicks coming into a front three alongside Ross and Marc Grogan.
The opposition themselves had several noticeable players missing and both sides were playing with new personnel in some shape or form. It was evident early in the game that Church's superior passing game and pace up front was going to cause the Black serious problems and it didn’t take them long to open up their opponents and create the first guilt-edged opportunity of the game. Some slick passing ended up with Brendan missing a real top class opening by pulling his shot wide of the far post. It was a sign of things to come though as the remainder of the first half was dominated by Church who created chance after chance. The first to be created, although a touch fortunate, saw Fabian Connolly open his account when his deflected effort looped over former goalie Steve Grogan and into the
far corner. Further goals including two from Ross Kendall and another deflected effort, this time from Marc Grogan, opened up an emphatic 4-0 lead for a rampant Church hill side. Special mention must be made for Ross's second goal of the day an exquisite lob from all of 30 yards over a stranded opposing keeper.
The second half saw Black begin with a much- improved approach and attitude and their undoubted quality began to start to make and impact on the proceedings. Smudger particularly down their right hand side was neat and tidy and always a genuine threat. His only problem was that in Fabian Connolly -  he had one of the best left backs in the division to get past and this resulted in little joy for the Black Horse player. A much more even contest was produced in the second half, only the deadly Ross Kendall was able to beat his opposing goalkeeper to make the church score five. Former Church forward Stu Hall hit the crossbar for Black Horse but the final score resulted in a superb all-round performance and was rewarded with a 5-0 scoreline.
Team score for this has to an almost perfect 9.5. Man of the match is a tough decision with so many great performances, so it’s a joint one this week - Anthony Savery, outstanding in so many ways and led by example, but also Ross Kendall, fantastic finishes, coupled with pace, skill and a real cutting edge up front. Well done lads on a brilliant all-round performance.
